Week 04

Overview

In lecture this week, we will learn how to incorporate biological reality in the form of positive and negative density dependence.

Out-of-class activities

Please read the following resources to reinforce the topics covered in lecture this week:

Submissions

Semester project

This week marks the first submission related to the course Semester Project! Please complete the Potential Communities activity and upload it to Moodle.

Self reflection

Your second self-reflection of the semester is also due on Moodle. Here are some questions I invite you to consider as you complete this reflection (but as always, feel free to reflect on whatever you find most pressing).

Related to ecology:

  1. What are some things we learned in the first three weeks of this course that surprised you?

  2. As we transition from focusing on Population Ecology concepts, to Community Ecology (how different species interact with one another), do you have any lingering questions about population ecology? This can be about general concepts, or about specific points like model equations.

  3. How do you feel about the grading structure of this course, where you play a key role in evaluating your own performance in the class? Does the grading structure create any anxiety for you? Do you think it could make you more or less motivated to learn the course material?

Related to broader coursework:

  1. Some of you had exams in one or more classes in the past week to ten days days. Reflect back on how you studied for these, how they went, and whether you think you need to study differently for future exams.

  2. At the end of this week, we will be one month into the semester. Is the semester going as you expected it to go? What is one thing that is going better than you expected, and what is one thing that isn’t going as well as you expected?

  3. What are some things happening outside of your University experience that you think are affecting your semester? Is there anything happening outside of the University that you wish we would spend some time discussing in this class (or other classes)?
